An Open Letter to an Awesome Young Man

Dear Kylan,

It’s possible that you may never be able to understand everything that has transpired over the course of your life and unfortunately, even if you eventually will it’s not my place to tell you all the things you don’t know. I realize other people in your life give you information that may not be entirely accurate and for now, that’s just the way it is. God will bless you with the same spirit of discernment He gave your father and you will be able to figure out all the truths you seek when the time is right.

What I can tell you is that your dad and I love you and all of the kids more than anything — equally and unconditionally. I’ve always wished things could be different… I remember writing on your very first birthday about how I couldn’t wait until the day we could all share a close relationship. When we were living in town, I feel like that was building, but it didn’t take long to be broken once we moved away.

There are so many things in a child’s life that they have no control over, but if there is one thing I pray that you keep control of, it’s the way you view situations that involve you. Both of your parents — and your stepmom — love you dearly… I miss having you pop on Facebook every day and chat with me. Knowing you guys are okay and hearing about how your days were going was one of the highlights of my afternoons!

You are an awesome young man… a talented, strong, clever young man! I loved being able to get to know you over the last year and prayerfully, one day all the broken bridges between us all can be mended. Until that day comes, please know that you are always in my heart… the kids miss you and love you and everybody here is thinking of you today and wishing you the very best birthday ever!!!
