I was offered the chance to review some select items from a skin care line by Skin Free, a company whose products are designed “for delicate, sensitive, or very dry skin.” Their labels also boast to be “helpful for allergies, eczema, psoriasis, or dematitis.” Well, those are some pretty tall orders for ANY product, especially those affordably priced and with no fragrance, colorants, or harmful chemicals. Skin Free Skin Care has SIX products that have received a toxicity rating of “0″ from the Environmental Working Group and TWO products that have received a toxicity rating of “1″ {per the EWG, a rating of 0-2 reflects virtually NO potentially toxic ingredients in the product}. To put this into perspective, Revlon ColorStay Mineral Eyeshadow (which is a relatively popular product) has an EWG rating of 9!

The products I chose to test were

  • Skin Free Niaouli Butter Stick ($7.99 – 1 oz.)
  • Skin Free Super Moisture Body Balm ($12.99 – 8 oz.)
  • Skin Free After Shower Moisture Spritz ($11.99 – 8 oz.)
  • Skin Free Extra Moisturizing Soap ($3.99 – 3.5 oz.)

These are actually the products featured in their Basic Four gift set, so you can get all four for $35. Skin Free also offers free shipping on all orders of $25 or more! In addition to their own website located at www.skinfree.net, Skin Free’s products are also available at certain CVS/pharmacy locations on the east coast and in 2500 Walgreen’s stores as well as on www.drugstore.com, www.walgreens.com, and www.cvs.com.

HPIM5140Skin Free Niaouli Butter Stick: Since I don’t have particularly dry skin, I decided to try this out on my lips and I have to say, I was impressed. It’s got a silky texture to it and made my lips feel extremely soft and supple. I have to admit, I will likely be using this in place of my regular lip balm as I found it to provide a more lasting supply of moisture to my lips. I actually have pretty dry lips and they crack as a result. Most lip balms don’t help with the “scratchy” feeling when I rub my lips together but this actually did away with the dry/cracked areas on my lips completely. Let me reiterate: VERY impressed!

HPIM5137Skin Free After Shower Moisture Spritz: When I tried this out, I was immediately alarmed. The description claims that this product has no greasy or oily feel to it. When I sprayed it onto my body after getting out of the shower, I felt dismay at how thick and “baby oil gel-ish” it felt on my skin. I was tempted to get back in the shower to wash it off. I absolutely HATE products that leave me feeling greasy all day. *cringe* But, to give it a fair shot, I rubbed it in and dried off. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it quickly soaked into my skin and while my skin did feel smooth and soft, there was NO oily residue on my body. *angelic HALLELUJAHs begin* I was thrilled. I thought this would be the product that I would be forced to give a bad review, but I actually ended up loving it. THUMBS UP to the whole “non greasy/oily” thing :)

HPIM5138Skin Free Super Moisture Body Balm: This is the product I liked the most of the four I received to test. I used this on my heels, elbows, knees, ankles… and then rubbed it into each of my hands after applying it elsewhere. The best descriptive word I can give each of the products I’ve tried from the Skin Free line is SILKY… not oily or greasy. I’m not a fan of slipping and sliding around in my flip flops after putting an oil-based moisturizer or lotion on my feet, which is why I have all but banned oil-based moisturizers from my bathroom cabinet. I put this on and initally had pretty much the same reaction I had to the after shower spritz, but it quickly soaked into my skin and felt GRRRRREAT. I put on a light, breathable pair of socks (which I always do after moisturizing my feet) and when I took them off to put my flip flops back on, they felt SUPER soft. I am definitely in LOVE with this body balm! It even had my hands feeling smooth just from applying it and I didn’t have to wipe it off because there wasn’t a greasy feeling to them afterward.

HPIM5132Skin Free Extra Moisturizing Soap: I will start by saying that I am partial to soaps with a scent. I like to smell girly and I can definitely appreciate a soap that has a fresh or even flowery smell to it. (I’m in love with anything tropical LOL) However, since these products are hypoallergenic and are designed for ALL people – including those who have issues with their skin – I can deal with the fact that it has no fragrance. I can’t really say that I was “thrilled” about the soap but it gave a nice lather and I will say that most soaps I have tried that claim to have “no” fragrance actually have a rather disgusting smell. This soap doesn’t leave any scent on the body, so I can express my gratitiude to Skin Free Skin Care for creating a fragrance free soap that is actually fragrance free! For those who need a product without unnecessary chemical additives (like colorants and fragrance) this is definitely a great one!
