I am a little more rested now so I can remember a little more. I had a pretty intense labor with Tre! Barry coached me through everything with breathing and watched the whole thing… he was running around snapping pictures and driving me up the wall! He cut Tre’s cord… he is just too proud of his little boy! He keeps talking about getting his hair braided… too funny.
Here is Tre’s birth story:
I was due to have my child on Sunday, September 23, 2001. On Wednesday, September 26, (3 days late) my husband, Barry, and I went to Labor and Delivery for them to check and see if I had dilated to 4 cm yet. I got admitted to the hospital at 10:30 am because I was 4-5 cm dilated; they gave me an enema at 10:35 am hoping that it would irritate my uterus enough to start contractions- that didn’t work. Their labor rooms were completely full so they kept me in pre-admit on the monitor until around 12:00 noon when they finally moved me to the Labor room. They monitored me and checked my uterus several times but there was no change so they ended up breaking my water at about 12:30pm to see if that would put me into labor on my own, which it didn’t. They decided to start a Pitocin drip. So they had to put in an IV while they were doing that, they ended up sticking me 6 times and blowing 4 of my veins (OUCH!) and the worst part is I ALREADY HATED NEEDLES!!!!!! Finally, at about 1:45pm, they started the Pitocin to induce labor, which worked almost TOO quickly. When I got the stadol at about 2:15pm, I was still 5cm. I was in PAIN!!!!!!!!!
Barry was feeding me ice chips cause I was so weak from the contractions I couldn’t hardly function- he was also “coaching” me with my breathing, reminding me to breathe slowly and focus on breathing in through my mouth and out through my nose to try to concentrate on that rather than the pain (the nurse told him all of that!) He was even breathing WITH me! It was sweet now that I think back but at the time it was extremely irritating! (Not to mention the fact that he was taking HORRIBLE pictures of me in labor DURING my contractions!)
They checked me again at 2:25pm and I was 8cm. After they did my epi around 2:30pm, they checked my cervix again and said that it seemed I had backed up to 7cm!!!!! That REALLY discouraged me (not to mention the fact that I didn’t even know that was POSSIBLE!). The epidural didn’t take at all; the only thing that it did was make my entire left leg go dead! By 3:20 they had given the epidural to me through the catheder in my back two more times, neither of which worked so I ended up having to have completely natural childbirth, which I was not thrilled about to say the least!
At 3:30pm I was between 8-9 cm. I was in so much pain I wanted to give up and go home! At about 3:50pm I was a “good 9 cm” and they started prepping for the birth, letting down the bottom of the bed and pulling up the stirrups, bringing in the incubator and the scale. I started pushing when I got to 10 cm at about 3:57pm and our second child was born at 4:11pm. IT’S A BOY!!!!!!! They held him up for Daddy to take a picture of him and then they cleaned him off and weighed and measured him: 9 pounds, 6 ounces at 21.5 inches long. BARRY CHRISTOPHER ROBERTSON III (Tre for short)
