There’s Something Wrong… Young People: LISTEN! Grown People: TALK!

Young people need more mature, wise adults in their ears. It’s really sad how many young men have no real concept of respect. It’s even more sad how many young ladies have no real concept of respecting THEMSELVES! These girls today are busy bodies. These boys today are wanna be players. Where are the parents teaching them better?? Teach them to shut up and listen once in a while. Don’t ask them to. DEMAND that they do. Teach them to value themselves and to realize how precious their “firsts” are — teach them not to devalue their first kiss… and not to take physical relationships lightly. Teach them while they are young that EVERYBODY is NOT having sex — that they CAN still be pure when they marry. Why are these lessons waning?? Why are so many parents resigning themselves to the supposed “fact” that it won’t happen so they don’t need to try to make it happen?

Showing Understanding Keeps Kids Safe {Encourage Them To Be Honest!}

My kids know that I will understand just about anything and help them, go to battle for them, support them in any circumstance, mistake, or bad situation as long as they are honest with me. When we catch them being dishonest, they get the worst punishments possible. Why? Because in this house, there isn’t much worse you can be than a liar. They will make mistakes over the course of their lives… they will do things they regret. My hope is that as they grow up and mature, they possess the mentality that no matter what they mess up, it can be fixed with honesty and accountability. They may lose things – they may even lose people, but they will always be trustworthy… and most of the time, their honesty — and the resulting sense of integrity they will live by — will keep them from making mistakes they will have to be responsible for.

I definitely talk to my son — but not nearly as much as I have serious talks with my daughters. I leave most of that to my husband – it’s more of his “job” to raise our son to be a man. I’m a woman. I know women. I know girls. I know how girls respond to situations in life, particularly situations involving boys… so it’s important that I impart the wisdom I’ve gained through life experience so that I encourage my girls to grow up to be good women.

One thing I have noticed is that when girls get to a certain age, they don’t want you to think they’re listening. My son doesn’t mind sitting and listening to me give him knowledge I’ve gained over the years. My girls? Not so much.

Parenting is tough. As someone who was married at 18 and has never known the experience of parenting alone, I can definitely appreciate the struggles of a single mother or father. I definitely understand the tension between who parents who are no longer together. It’s easy to start conflicts for the sake of taking your frustration out on the other parent or making sure they aren’t comfortable since you aren’t comfortable. Not all relationships work out, but when a child is born into it every effort should be exhausted in order to allow that child (or children) to maintain healthy relationships with both parents and extended family, including existing and subsequent siblings.
